Past Time (part of an installation)

This is a small artwork that is part of a larger artwork - well its a wall based installation. The entire piece is called 'Virtual Truth', and its to do with the various constituent fragment within the self that make up the entire human being . The home being a metaphor for the self. The other 2 installation pieces were connected also with the idea of home.

The two bowls are made of paper pulp and swathed in cotton bandages. They each have a small square cream coloured piece of tarlatan, which bears a relief print of hands. This being a visual representation of puppets hands that hang uselessly on nails. These are attached to the bowls with very small brass safety pins. Within the full installation the bowls were situated on the floor either side of the box table. They had brass discs, thrown into them like coins to street beggars. There were also some thrown nearby on the floor. On the ‘coins’ in Medieval Latin text are words which when translated describe those states of grace such as love, hope, charity, faith, tenderness which represent those qualities that have fallen from the face of mankind in the shadow of the conflict.

This work was made initially using trace monotype and then working into that, with soft pastels. I used one image which I had developed previously for a collograph print and then it became something else again here.

Obdurate Heart

Obdurate Heart

From my new series of printworks with the title: "Traces in the Wood" which comes from the fact that all of the prints are made using tinted wooden panels and trace monotypes. This one is about the experience of being a refugee. I made three prints on this subject - this having come about because i was making an edition of prints for an international printmakers portfolio exchange project in Australia.

This is another print from the series "Traces in the Wood' Its somewhat more light hearted than Obdurate Heart in that its to do with going beyond the boundaries that represent who you are. Going beyond your own imagination - into the centre of yourself.

This is another work made for my 'Traces on Wood' series. There are about 14 of them so far and I would like to be able to produce about 30 if i possibly can manage it. I sent three of these images to Antonio, who is co ordination the exhibition in Trapani and making his own artwork also when he has the time . I would think it is very difficult for him to find the time and the energy. Sorry, I digress, getting back to the traces on wood series - they take a lot of time to develop even though they may appear 'simple'. I have a huge amount of hybrid forms which I have developed and I am continually researching (nowadays it's mainly on the internet) and developing. I am forever seeking to expand this resource bank of my own hybrids, using the scanner, computer and Photoshop has helped me greatly . Previously I had to do a lot of work by using tracing paper and then sketching and then photocopying to make forms larger or smaller. In this particular piece i.e., 'Healing Chamber' I have represented the forum of the psychiatric patient or subject and the therapist. As artists I feel that we are often our own therapist. We heal ourselves. Often we put our selves through it as well but we develop and grow consequently.
