I never could read Joyce. I tried but was defeated. Your work has inspired me to go back and give it another go. You are obviously a very literary man and your work is very fragile and delicate. I think making art is not just your job but you love it and it shows.

Joyce the Pluralist - Paris

This is a watercolour painting, in the style popularized by Andy Warhol, taken from a photograph of James Joyce (1882-1941) in Paris in 1920 at the door of the famous bookshop, Shakespeare and Co. owned by Joyce's friend, the American, Sylvia Beach. She was a patron and the first publisher of "Ulysses". At this time, while constantly short of funds, Joyce had started to dress in a dandified fashion. This original painting is based on that photograph. ©

Nice catchy format Roger, that works well in the context. I like the reference to Warhol - making this the "Elvis" of writers presumably?

That's a surprising leap into abstraction you've taken Roger, after your previous controlled, figurative watercolours. I'd be interested to know what's making you take this path? Thanks /j-p.

Morning JP. The incorporation of Oil abstract paintings at this time has been due to pressure from existing clients and a personal desire that has been suspended for about 4 years to increase the variety and range of work available from my studios.

Waiting for Godot This original watercolour painting is my interpretation of the title of the Samuel Beckett play of the same name. The play, originally written in French as En Attendant Godot, should have translated as While Waiting for Godot. Beckett specified the setting as “A Country Road. A Tree.” I have adopted a minimalist style to reflect the story. ©2005

Bloomsday - June 16th - is an annual celebration among Joyce fans throughout the world, from Fort Lauderdale to Melbourne. It is celebrated in at least sixty countries worldwide, but nowhere so imaginatively, of course, as in Dublin. The novel, Ulysses, by James Joyce recounts the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin - June 16, 1904 - as an ordinary Dubliner, Leopold Bloom, wends his way through the urban landscape, the odyssey of a modern-day Ulysses. This painting is from James Joyce’s caricature of Leopold Bloom, drawn in Myron Nutting’s studio in the 1920’s. ©RogerCummiskey.com
